Active websites up, running for Annapolis
By JOE SHAFRAN

Maybe it’s the new year, but 2008 seems to be the year for some new and revised web sites on running and sports in general. One is that of the Annapolis Striders at www.annapolisstriders.org. It’s a newly revised site that offers so much more than the one of the past several years and the new one shows a 2006 picture of the late Ben Moore and his wife Betty. Another new site is www.runannapolis.com that will cover not only running but other events as well... This one is a a new business venture of four people, Ron Bowman, Ken Mierke, Lara Mish and Ellen Kelly, longtime runners and volunteers who now have turned the pastime into a business. Another, not a business, is www.Activeannapolis.com, a creation by the Broerman’s of the Fleet Feet store in Eastport and Parker Jones long-time owner of Capitol bicycles in Annapolis. Scott Broerman explains it is another resource for the sports-minded in the Annapolis area. You are encouraged to take a look all three and to feel free to pass on any information to them.

Betty Moore, Ben’s widow, says condolences keep coming in on Ben’s death, by mail and among many others, a recent e-mail from a soldier in Iraq who recalls being a Moore’s Marine a few years ago. She tells me that a Naval Academy memorial is being planned for Ben, hopefully the first part of March. There will be a public announcement.

Race of the Week. A reminder of the coming Zooma half marathon and 10K race, Sunday June 1 in Annapolis that it is a run for both men and women and that the registration is nearing a thousand. It is the first of a nationwide series, for a charity, Care, this one starting at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. One of the race brochures leaves the impression that it’s for women only, but I’m told that men are welcome. Go to www.Zoomarun.com.

Runner of the Week. Bill Law whose been running as long as anyone can remember. To him age is only a number and if he isn’t registered for a local running race, he’s off to some biking or mountain climbing event, urging on the youngsters in the crowd who seem to loose steam in some of those intense events. His philosophy... Keep on biking and running, considering being able to do either, a gift, but just keep doing it.
