Runners hit stride before storm By JOE SHAFRAN
I would imagine that the directors of the Valentine’s Day 5k at Kinder Farm Park Saturday were pleased with the turnout. Saturday was the day that ended nearly two months of spring-like weather that had us running in our shorts. I’m told that close to 400 people registered for the 5K run. Strider President Dan Symancyk, figured that many runners wanted to get in one more race on dry pavement . He was also hoping that all the present snow will melt and there would be good weather for the upcoming B&A half and full marathons on March 5th so that trails boss Dave Dionne and his crew won’t have to use snow throwers and salt as they did last year to allow last year’s races to go on.
I see it’s going to take a lot of work to get runners to wear visible I.D. tags. At the race at Kinder Farm Park Saturday, I had mine on but some of the runners with whom I talked asked what was the thing that I was wearing around my neck and when I told them it was my visible I.D. which they all thought it was a good idea but admitted they had no identification whatsoever on them except the number on their race bib. From now on I think I’ll hand out copies of my November 24th column that explains the need for instant identification should there be need for medical help, young runner or old. The ambulance paramedics say they can no longer rummage through someone’s pocket or purse to get a needed identification or medical information and the few seconds it takes, sometimes may mean the difference between life and death. You can access the column on the Capital’s website capitalgazette.com
If I told you about an upcoming 5K race at Harman’s Park at Hanover, would you know where it is ? Many years ago, long before the coming of 1-97 or Route 100, Harman’s Park was in the middle of nowhere in the northern part of Anne Arundel County off Ridge Road known as Route 713. The Joe Canon stadium is in the park and on Saturday March 25th , they will have the Joe Canon memorial 5K run and fun walk. Joe Canon used to be the park superintendent. They play baseball at Joe Canon and I’m afraid if someone hits one out of the park these days it could well smash one of the windows of a nearby hotel or office building. You see, Harman’s Park is no longer in the middle of nowhere. Surrounding it is Arundel Mills Mall and the explosive growth around it. Now you can get to the race by using I-97 or 100. Turn off at Arundel Mills and look for Ridge Road and Harman’s Park not far from the new Safeway. Call Wendy Scarborough at 410-222-7313 Ext. 3554 for details and don’t forget to tell her this, “Joe sent me.”
As for other calendar items, make note that rather than have to turn down 12,000 runners, the folks at the Army Ten Miler in Washington are going to allow 24,000 runners this year and to accommodate them , the start will be in waves of 12,000. Mark your calendar for the opening of registration on-line on April 8 and on April 29th, the Strider’s beginning running Program starts its 14th annual ten week run at the Bates Track in Annapolis. This is the one that holds its graduation at a West Annpolis run in the summer. Call Evan Thomas at 410- 451-4255 or Penny Goldstein at 410-721- 6614.
In an upcoming issue of Marathons and Beyond , you can read an article by Bernadette “Bea” Carson ,a marathoner from Arnold, who now heads her own corporation, Carson and Associates, which coaches major corporations in meeting the future. A few years ago, before she left to pursue her Ph.D, Bea was my co-host on the Let’s Shape Up radio program. I remember her saying that if she ever wrote a book the title would be “I couldn’t run across my front lawn”. Her magazine article is entitled “ Savor the Journey” in which she describes what running has done for her self-confidence and goal orientation. Bea’s web site is carson-consultants.com
