Runners put spring in step By JOE SHAFRAN
Each year, I get a good reminder that spring is on its way, when we move the clock ahead as we did last weekend, seeing the crocuses in bloom as I run by the gardens at the Harbour Gates Apartments on Bestgate Road in Annapolis, and the Cherry Blossom ten miler in Washington on Sunday March 30 and then I’m reminded of the Strider’s Cherry Pit ten miler here at South River School complex at Edgewater on Sunday April 6th. There is usually a good contingent from this area for the Cherry Blossom run. If you had never heard it before, the rallying cry for the Cherry Pit run is, “ They’ve got the blossoms and we have the pits.” Kathy Hansen and my running neighbor Jon Line are directors. There was an enormous crowd of runners (over a thousand) and spectators at the B&A half and full marathon earlier this month. Donna Cogle and Penny Goldstein were in charge with their usualgood helpers. Last year, Cogle had a sign at her table reading “complaint desk” I’m told she had no complaints last year and I see there was no sign this year and I heard no complaints. Much of the crowd had come to see the female finish of the half marathon, with Kline, Morganti and Walsh making it one of those “runs of the century” Kline tells me she received word this week that she is being ranked seventh nationally in her age group (in her forties), for women half marathoners. Kline's time in the B&A race was 1:28:20. Morganti's was 1:28:35. and Walsh's was 1:28:50. chip timing by Run High, a national firm.
However, one of the other highlights of the B & A Sunday morning was the kids race at the Severna Park High School track directed by Susan Noble. It began at 10 and was over by ten after. The course is short and those kids run fast. The kids event is becoming very popular with 65 kids participating. The youngest was 11 months and next in line was 16 months and went up from there. Keep in mind the distance is only 25 yards in some races, but these kids may well be the Klines, Morganti’s, Walsh’s, Jacobs and Lang’s of 2025.
