Permit process causes more to change course By JOE SHAFRAN
In an earlier column, I suggested that before you head out for especially a Sunday morning race in this area, you best check on whether there will in fact be a race or perhaps a race with a course change. You might recall that last year, the long-held Striders’ Metric Marathon at Harwood was canceled outright a few days before the race when the state refused a permit for the use of a highway, citing a safety problem. And two current races, the Cherry Pit at Edgewater on April 6th might have a course change as will be the case with the Zooma half marathon and 10 K, booked for Annapolis on June 1st. The races will be run on their scheduled dates but with an alteration in the course. It is becoming more and more apparent that area governments are refusing to close public roads on a Sunday morning.
Is there anyone who believes that we will ever see a female winning a marathon or even a half marathon? With more and more women taking up running these days, it was interesting to see that just after the announcement of the June 1st Annapolis Zooma run as part of a women’s race series, there were 750 registrants, While there may not be a female overall half marathon winner for a while, we are already seeing races with some close female rivalries. At the recent B & A half marathon, two local women may have made running history coming in within seconds of each other. While the first woman was Rebecca Nathan of Arlington Virginia, who finished 29 th overall out of 615. In an hour and twenty seven minutes, it was the next two women who may have made history. Coming in within seconds of each other , 31st, and 32nd overall. The first was Sheryl Kline who came in a minute twenty one seconds. Five second behind her was Dr. Christine Morganti. Both in their forties and rivals in past races, they definitely are spicing up the local racing scene.

There are two runners of the week both of whom competed at the recent Aleph Bet 5k in Annapolis. One is 8 year old Jacob Adelstein of Odenton and the other is 47 year old Jim Anderson of Annapolis. Jacob may be following in the footsteps of his father who ran a marathon. Jacob’s goal at the recent Aleph Bet run was to make it in under a half hour and he did it in 28 minutes. You will be able to spot him April 13th at the Orioles Advocates 5K. As for Anderson, who finished first in 18 minutes plus a few seconds , he apparently believes in spreading the wealth. After his win, he was seen counseling the second place finisher on footwork and how he might beat Anderson next time out.
Race of the week… the Annual Joe Cannon 5 K and walk at the Joe Cannon stadium at Hanover at Arundel Mills, Saturday. It is directed by Wendy Scarborough of the County Department of Recreation and Parks and memorializes Mr. Cannon, the late director of the Parks Department.
Hint of the week… Keep the music volume down on the MP3 or IPOD, so you can hear what’s going on around you . Last week, running along Bestgate Road, I was surprised when a woman runner, with bud in her ears, unexpectedly looked over and said thanks when I complimented her running style. Could be her music was off but I would like to think she heard me and just may be a person who runs with the base down.
