Navy crew fares well at Boston Marathon
By JOE SHAFRAN

They say it was a nor’ easter this past weekend, so why was the rain coming down in buckets and flooding the roads here last Monday morning, but dry and 48 degrees, at Hopkinton Green, the start of the Boston Marathon? They say it may have been forgiveness for the monsoon type weather there last year. Also, in the 112 years they have run the Boston, it is very seldom that Patriot’s Day ever falls on the Jewish holiday of Passover, by which observant Jewish runners were not able to carb-out the night before the race. Many of .the members of the Marathon team from the U.S. Naval Academy, listing their hometown as Annapolis, did their usual sub-3 hour runs at Boston. Their coaches also ran. Both from Annapolis, they are Nathan Nudelman, 31, who ran it in 3:16 and Dr. Tom Hattar, 46, in 3:08 and there were others from this area. Joel Ogden of Annapolis , mentioned in the previous column, did it, his first at Boston in 4:05. Robert Cheruiyot from Kenya was again the male winner at 2:07. The female was Dire Tune of Ethiopia in 2:25.

Standing in the living room last week at the Annapolis home of Betty Moore, the widow of the late Ben Moore, one would think one was at the Fruit of The Loom tee shirt factory. In the Moore living room there were dozens of shirts piled on tables and there might have been more in other rooms. Turns out that Ben Moore kept every tee shirt from every race he ever ran and that could be in the hundreds and it has now become the job of the Moore family to figure out what to do with them. Betty arranged to have all those imprinted with the words Moore’s Marines sent to our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many others will go to charities and many more will be sewn into quilts for the Moore offspring and their families.

However, Taking care of shirts and the dozens of medals and items of memorabilia collected by Ben over the years was not the biggest concern of the Moore family. It was figuring out the best way, with Ben gone, how best to acknowledge the hundreds of condolences that keep arriving . So, let this column be one of the places where the family might publicly express their thanks.

You may know that anytime I am asked to teach someone how to run, and its many times a year, I always tell the story that in all my running years, I have forgotten more than I have learned and recommend they enroll in the Annapolis Strider’s Beginning Runners classes. They start this Saturday morning at 8 at the Bates track at the Weems-Whalen sports area in Annapolis back of Maryland Hall. This is the time-honored Evan Thomas, Donna Cogle ,Penny Goldstein, noninvasive ten week course, with no book or exams, just practicum, that starts you off as a walker and has you doing a 5K (a little over 3 miles) run at West Annapolis on Saturday July 12, and has you asking at the finish line, “O.K, what’s next ?” ...In addition to the Saturday class, you train again on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 P.M. also at the Bates track. The fee for the course is $15, which automatically signs you up as a member of the Annapolis Striders. Otherwise, it’s free for Strider members who might want to bone up on the latest running techniques. For more information visit www.annapolisstriders.org or call Goldstein at 410.721.6614. There are other local training courses that get you set for half and full marathons both by the Striders and also at www.runannapolis.com site which offers training for the June 1st Zooma women’s half-marathon in Annapolis.

Race of the week... Salute the Legends, Saturday May 4th at the Severn School at Severna Park. Recalling David Snyder, who, had he not been killed in a car that was hit by a drunken driver, would have been in this year’s graduating class at Severn. A buddy of his was also killed. The race proceeds go to both the school and to MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Runner of the week... Michael Wardian, 33, of Northern Virginia who does run some Annapolis area races and who has proven once again that the human body has amazing capacity. Three weekends ago ,he ran two hour marathons in two days winning the National in Washington D.C. in 2:24 and coming in second at Knoxville, in 2:29 the next day.

Hint of the week... We’re getting into warmer weather. Keep yourself hydrated, but just don’t overload.
