Runners of the week stay in line with competition
By JOE SHAFRAN

Jon Line and Megan Cureton, both of Annapolis, are the Runners of the Week. Jon, a sub-three hour marathoner, who trains daily in my neighborhood, gave me a thrill the other morning and invited me to run with him at his sub 7 minute mile marathon pace. I used to do a seven minute mile but the body just won’t allow it anymore , so I gave up after one block on Bestgate Road and let him do his several miles onto the B& A trail and back in time by 11 o’clock to open the Gotta Run store downtown ,where he is the manager. Megan, born and bred in Annapolis, grew up behind the counter at Easy Street, sort of gift shop and now runs it with her husband Brett. While Megan is a full-time business owner, she continues to be a super athlete and now recovered from a foot injury, she is back to running, but is also seen on a bicycle, preparing for a summer of 5 triathlons and number six will be the coming Annapolis triathlon, but she also is signed up for the Annapolis Ten Miler and the Marine Marathon.

Hint of the Week… Jim Adams, owner of the Falls Road Running stores in Baltimore, reminded on his radio talk show last Saturday that whether we like it or not, we need to pay attention to the advances in technology and note that on-line internet race registration is apt to quickly shut the window on you if you plan to run popular races. The Army 10 miler, set for late summer, closed it’s registration in 42 days on May 16th with 26,000 registered. Adams reminds that registration for the Annapolis Striders 10 miler on August 26th opened last Friday and is apt to close any hour now if it hasn’t already. Craig Harrison and Lisa Fontaine will direct the race again with a limit of 5,000 runners. Adams reminds that it takes lots of volunteers to handle the popular Annapolis race and urges quick sign-up for that, also.

Memorial day has come and gone, and while we recall those who have died fighting for this country, this time of year we recall a couple of runners from this area who have died. One of them is Marine Captain Rick Gannon, an Academy graduate who was one of the early casualties in Iraq. Rick did many of our runs around here and helped coach in cross-country. He also participated in local Scouting activity. An accomplished marathoner, he ran his first race when he was nine years old in California. As for the other runner, John, “Johnny Boy” Simms of Annapolis, who inspired many into running in the sixties. He was killed about twenty years ago this time of year when he was hit by a car an killed on General’s Highway. He did a daily early morning round trip run from his Parole Street home in Annapolis to the Eisenhower Golf Course. The police report on his death mentions that the driver of the vehicle that hit him had fallen asleep at the wheel.

About a year and a half ago in this column, I had proposed that runners and/or walkers wear a visible identification tag in case something should happen and medical help is needed. I had repeated it a couple of times. The idea caught the attention of officials at the Anne Arundel County Department of Health and other county agencies. Thinking it a good idea, they had tags produced and began to distribute them to runners and others. However, due to budget cuts the County agencies cannot continue with the project. Other options are being considered and I’ll keep you advised. I do thank them for their support.

The sprinkle that began about 8 o’clock last Sunday morning in and around Annapolis did not stop the 11th annual Hunt Meadow 5K and1 mile fun run, even though there was mention in the flier of a rain date. Those sprinkles may have invigorated some of the runners. J.T. Taylor, 15, a Hunt Meadow resident and a track and fielder from Archbishop Spalding was first across the finish line for the 5K in 16:20. And for the mile run, I found it interesting to see another resident, Mary Cissel in physical education at Anne Arundel Community College leading the group of about 25 in pre-race stretching. I was also pleased to see that the race director Roger Hebden is well involved in athletics. He recently turned over his job as head of the Striders Junior running program to Jim Anderson, who also ran the Hunt Meadow 5K and came in among the first finishers. I stopped by that race also to see Glenn Carr of Annapolis, who told me that reading this column inspired him to return to running. He finished the Hunt Meadow in about 20 minutes and is already signed up for another 5K in the next few weeks.

Runnning Hint If you drop something just as the race starts, don’t stop to pick it up. You’ll endanger yourself and others. Trust that a race official will get it or move to the side and wait until everyone has crossed the starting line and then retrieve it. (from Freddi Carlip, editor and publisher of Runners Gazette)

Race of the week….The Striders Dawson’s Father’s Day 10K. Sunday, June 17 at 8 A.M. This is the 3rd in the Championship Series. I see that this race that may have a bit of a course change. If you are signed up for the annual event, head for the Severna Park High School. It’s possible that the race will start and end there but, according to Lisa Murphy, it may switch down the street a half block to the B&A trail. When I spoke to Lisa last weekend she seemed very calm and collected about the change that may take the race off the streets of Severna Park and onto the trail. There’s a kids’ race, too, which will conform to the route change.
