Early birds are plentiful in the area
By JOE SHAFRAN

I may have opened a can of worms in the last column when I praised the early morning 6:06 runners for crawling out of bed every day to do their run. Soon after the column appeared, I walked into the WaWa at Crownsville and one of the employees, Frank Zydowicz 17, wanted me to know that he runs every morning at 4 A.M. in his Arden-on the-Severn neighborhood. Zydowicz comes from a military family and wants to be in shape when he reports to Fort Bragg, North Carolina next month. His mention of his early morning running reminded me of 72 year old Milt Taylor of Odenton who runs for an hour at 4 o’clock every morning. Milt ran his 168th marathon last weekend in South Dakota .He was trying to better 4 hours and 29 minutes. And don’t forget Emerson Davis, an Anne Arundel County Deputy Chief of Police who runs his Bay Hills neighborhood at about 5 o’clock every morning. And of course, there’s the runner they call the Speedo man, the all-season guy who runs downtown Annapolis in only his trunks and shoes And many people recall John “ Johnny Boy” Simms of Annapolis, who for 20 years ran General’s Highway every morning in the five o’clock hour from his home on Parole Street in Annapolis to Eisenhower Golf Course and back. Unfortunately, it was about 20 years ago in May that Johnny Boy was killed on one of those runs. A truck whose driver had fallen asleep at the wheel, veered onto the berm and struck him. Others of us run in the 7 o’clock hour and when I come out of my house, I need to look left and right so I won’t be run over by running neighbors. One is the prolific marathoner Nathan Nudelman who coaches the Naval Academy Marathon Club and another is Jon Line, the manager of the Gotta Run store in downtown Annapolis. I let Jon pass and start in after he’s well along on Bestgate Road. Nudelman is well over the Naval Academy Bridge and onto the B&A Trail. Line won the recent Crofton Kiwanis 10 K with ease and last Sunday, he came in 7th at the Father’s Day 10K at Severna Park that drew about 350 runners. Matt Mace finished in 35th place Sunday in 41:18 but I think he was just limbering up. He is headed to the West Coast to do the 100 mile run this weekend. Nudelman came in 13th Sunday. They called last Sunday’s run the Dawson 10 K, changed from a 5 miler and in that race, there was the continuation of the Walser father-son saga. These are the Walsers from Lusby. The “kid” usually beats his “old man” but I truly thought that for Father’s Day, at least, 24 year old Dave (the kid ) would let his “old man” 47 year old Dave beat him, just once. No such luck. The “kid” came in 53rd at 42:55 and the “old man” was 80th at 45:17.

An unusual and somewhat upsetting thing happened at the Dawson, Sunday. I was standing near the finish line chatting with Nudelman, when all of a sudden in the blink of an eye, he’s gone. One of the runners had collapsed, apparently from exhaustion, just steps away at the finish and as I looked over. Who was the first kneeling down to help? Nudelman. He’s in law enforcement and I could see where training and discipline kick in when needed. I saw that he and a couple others had the runner stabilized and talking in minutes.
