No sweat for A-10 competitors By JOE SHAFRAN
I don't want to hear any complaints about the weather for last Sunday's Annapolis Striders Ten Mile run. At race time (7:55 a.m.) at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial the Stadium, one of the weather services showed 69 degrees on its thermometer. It was overcast, with just a hint of humidity. We can thank Canada for sending down one of their cooling Alberta Clippers last Saturday night.
According to veteran race directors Lisa Fontaine and Craig Harrison, the race went off without a major hitch with nearly 5,000 runners from all over the world. With a good dialogue going between the running community and the Naval Academy officials, this years route took the runners back through the Academy for the first time since 2002. However the Navy didn't throw security out the window . In order to get a race packet, each runner had to show a photo I.D., which allowed a non-stop trip through the gate.
SWEATING IT OUT: One of the other running highlights was last Wednesday when the Moore's of Annapolis, Betty and Ben, were presented with the coveted License To Sweat by Annapolis Mayor Ellen Moyer. Someone said, "finally". Somebody else said it was a "no-brainer".
Ben and his wife are considered the father and mother of running in the Mid Atlantic. Back in the 1940's, Ben Moore was the star running back on the Naval Academy football team and they say he hasn't stopped running since .They say he insisted that Betty get into the swing of things.
Ben rose to the rank of Colonel in the Marines and some say it was because on a dare one night, he suited up and ran more than a hundred miles from the top of Mount McKinley to the Oregon coast.
Lately, his wife says a bunion has slowed him a bit, but most any day if you don't see him running outside, he's on the track at Halsey Field House at the Academy. The first license went to John Astle a few years ago, now the Annapolis Senator who ran the streets of Annapolis so much that he is accused of wearing a groove in the historic pavement. The story goes that every time she looked out her City Hall window, the then Annapolis City Clerk, Patti Bembi, saw Astle running down the sidewalk, so she devised the license which provides some perks, but also has one rule, that runners are not allowed to drip sweat on patrons of the sidewalk cafes. Bembi has become the Assistant City Manager at LaPlata in Charles County, so Ray Weaver, the Director of Public Information for the City, devised this year's license and was on hand for the presentation.
Runner of the week: Don Singer of Annapolis. Seems that every time I see him, he has a birthday, which means a present. Two years ago, I wished him a happy birthday, his 70th, and two days later he ran the Boston Marathon. Last Saturday, at the Ten Mile Run Exposition, he said it was his birthday, his 72nd. So, I wished him well and the next day he was to run the Ten Miler . The current Strider web site showcases Singer along with Jon Valentine and Reggie Hazeltine all alums of Cornell University, who returned to the campus in June to run a race.
Race of the Week: The Virginia Beach Rock and Roll half marathon. No matter where you go in Annapolils and for miles around, someone wearing a Team in Training T-shirt, ays they are headed to Virginia Beach this weekend for the running of the Rock and Roll Half. The attraction is that you can "Boogie" on the Beach. Last year there were 20 local bands, some at the start and finish and on 14 stages along the route and they hope to repeat this year.
TIP of the week: Runners should have their hamstrings looked after and possibly worked on. We sometimes take this vital part of the body for granted. For as many years that there's been an A-10 exposition, Dr. Robert Cohl, the chiropractor, has been there with his examining table working non-stop for free, with a runner on the table, bending a leg, giving a push then a pull and a shoving wedges under the body, checking hamstrings , explaining the work of the tendon and how it is supposed to propel you across the finish line rather than have you sitting on a curb in pain
