Time shift creates scary proposition
By JOE SHAFRAN

I try to figure what’s the greater hazard this time of year, the time change this past weekend or mingling at the OSMC Halloween 5K run and fun run for the kids on Sunday the 28th in West Annapolis.

As for the time change, daylight and darkness come an hour earlier, that in time we will adjust to... But it’s that Halloween 5K at West Annapolis on October 28 that can be hazardous, especially when it come to recognizing runners. First of all, it was a cold morning and many runners had on their winter wear. But worse than that, many of the good runners were in costume and that’s what got me into some trouble. Kathy Hanson said I passed her up and I usually say hello. I thought I had said hello to her in her face paint . She now tells me that was not her at all. She says she was dressed as a fairy princess. This race had that face painting lady, Michelle Johnson, so I can blame it all on her for not sparing the paint. And then there’s another cover-up, Charlie Boyle the racewalker and who did the 5k in a little over a half hour, had grown a beard and you wouldn’t know him.

I have been known to kid with people, after some of the marathons that I’ve run, that I was so pumped up, that I could do another 26.2. I never did. At the Ulman Cancer run at Columbia a couple of weeks ago, they had booked Lance Armstrong and I read in the Washington Post that a couple hundred people were waiting for him at the finish line to get his autograph only to see him flash by in about 18 minutes and keep on going. He returned in about 10 minutes. He said he felt so “pumped up” that he ran another mile out and back. He said he was warming up for last weekends New York Marathon that he did in 2:46.

The operators of two running stores in town showed they can relate to Annapolis tradition. The Gotta Run store downtown canceled their group run on Halloween night to allow the trick and treaters full use of the sidewalks and streets and Fleet Feet, just over the downtown drawspan in Eastport had a boat on display in their parking lot during the boat show. No, they haven’t gone into the boat business. The parking lot is theirs, but Scott Broerman tells me they did not want to discontinue the long tradition of a boat dealer using the lot to display his craft. There was also a good display of shoes along side the boat.

Runner of the Week Michael Wardian, 33, of Arlington Virginia who usually blows away the competition at most of the local Strider races was one of about a hundred or so marathoners from around the country who was selected for the Olympic tryouts in New York City this past weekend. He didn’t make the team but at his age, he can certainly try again in 2011. The top three for the U.S in China next year will be Ryan Hall, Dathan Ritzenheim and Brian Sell. A casualty at the tryouts was Ryan Shay who collapsed after about 5 miles and died.

Hint of the week… with the change in time, those who do their after-work runs be aware that at 6 0’clock it’s been dark for about an hour and those who do the morning runs with the traffic to their backs need to understand that eastbound motorists are blinded by the lower hanging sun and sometimes cannot see the runner in the berm .

Race of the week…. the first annual 5K at Westfield Annapolis last weekend that drew a very manageable 80. This was the race where no surface arrows were needed on the course. You just stayed circle around the the mall twice around. Like the Cherry Blossom in Washington, the two-way traffic give the slower runners a good chance to see how the front runners do it. It was directed by race veterans Ron Bowman and Ken Mierke and there seemed to no foul-ups.
