Running: A whole plate full of races awaits By JOE SHAFRAN, For The Capital
You thought there were only football games on Thanksgiving Day, right? Not so. For as long as there has been football on Thanksgiving Day, there have been running races.
In Cincinnatti Ohio, today’s Thanksgiving Run is the 99th annual and the one in Columbus, Ohio, was started just 4 years later. You name a city and I’m sure there is a morning run today. A friend of mine Julie Esphording has directed the Cincinnatti race which attracts several thousand each year. Julie is a runner from way back. She was one of the three U.S. women who qualified and ran the marathon in the Los Angeles Olympics in 1972. Unfortunately, the U.S. team didn’t do too well. Until that point, for centuries it was a male bastion, but Julie and a few other women runners, took the lead in the late 60’s and sold the committee on admitting women and today we have women from around the world running the Olympic marathon.
Around here there are plenty of races also today. The first ones that come to mind are the convenint tandem YMCA races, in conjunction with local Rotary Clubs, inlcluding the one at Camp Letts in Edgewater/ Mayo that attracts a huge following. In addition, yesterday, there was the Community College trot at Arnold and last weekend was the Striders’ Cold Turkey 10K at Edgewater. And there will be no lull between the holidays.
I know some people who are getting ready for the Ed Baron Hangover Classic in Northern Virginia on New Year’s Day, weather notwithstanding and there are numerous others.

In the Civil War, if history serves us correctly, above the Mason Dixon line, we were taught that Grant took Richmond and Sherman took Atlanta. I don’t think it was history repeating itself nor was it a military coup, but an Annapolis military contingent, did it again a week ago last Saturday, but this time it was the Richmond Marathon, where midshipmen from the Naval Academy invaded the town, for the 18th annual Richmond Marathon. While they didn’t overtake the town, they did capture many of the top spots in the race. These are midshipmen, male and female who are members of the Naval Academy Marathon Club an unusual sports group at the Academy that schedules only away games, none at home and that’s unfortunate, in that there is no pep rally or bonfire nor is there a local crowd to cheer them on.
They do three meets in Boston, Scranton, Pa., (that’s where their coach comes from ) and Richmond.
Many of the Navy marathoners just kept on running and joined up at the JFK 50-miler last Saturday in Western Maryland.
